Thyroid Health: Thyroid Disease, Thyroid Problems & Taking Care of Your Thyroid Gland

The Importance of Your Thyroid Gland and How to Take Care of It.

What Does The Thyroid Gland Do?

The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland located on either side of your windpipe in the front of the neck. This small gland produces thyroid hormones that control metabolism. Thyroid hormones play a role in heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and weight.

The thyroid gland produces two main hormones: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). T4 is inactive and must be converted to T3 in order for it to be used by the body. T3 is four times more potent than T4 and is responsible for most of the effects of thyroid hormone on metabolism.

Thyroid hormone levels are regulated by feedback mechanisms involving the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus. The pituitary gland releases thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), which signals the thyroid to produce more hormone.

Is The Thyroid Important?

Although the thyroid is a small gland, it is crucial for maintaining good health. An unhealthy thyroid can lead to a number of problems, including fatigue, weight gain, depression, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating. If you suspect that you may have a problem with your thyroid, it is important to see a doctor so that you can get treatment.
Without your thyroid doing its job efficiently, you can't live a fulfilled life; that's how important its job is. This is why taking care of your thyroid, by giving it the nutrients it needs to thrive, is so essential.
Happy thyroid, happy life!

Thyroid Problems and Disorders: Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidism, Thyroid Cancer and Beyond

It is clear from the above that the thyroid does a great deal of important work, and it is not uncommon for thyroid problems to occur. Thyroid-related issues can cause a variety of symptoms.
An estimated 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease. Up to 60 percent of these people are unaware they have the condition. Thyroid problems can occur at any age, but women are five to eight times more likely than men to develop a thyroid disorder.
Below are a few common diseases.

Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism

There are many different types of thyroid disorders, all of which can have a major impact on your health. The most common one is hypothyroidism, also known as 'underactive thyroid'. This occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones. There are a number of symptoms of hypothyroidism, such as fatigue, weight gain, and depression. On the other hand, if the amount of thyroid hormones being produced is too high, it's called hyperthyroidism. Luckily both conditions can be treated with medication.

If you think you may have a thyroid disorder, it's important to see your doctor for a diagnosis. Blood tests or even a thyroid scan may be necessary. There are a number of treatments available for thyroid disorders, so there's no need to suffer from the symptoms. With treatment, you can live a normal and healthy life.

Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the thyroid gland. There are four main types of thyroid cancer: papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic. Papillary and follicular are the most common. Medullary thyroid cancer is more aggressive and can be harder to treat. Anaplastic thyroid cancer is very rare and very aggressive. It will spread and damage tissue near the thyroid and then work its way to other parts of the body.

Most people with thyroid cancer have no symptoms in the early stages. As the tumor grows, it may cause problems such as a cough or hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, or pain in the neck or throat.

If you have any of these symptoms, see your doctor right away.

Some types of thyroid cancer can show up as enlarged nodules. However, only 1 in 10 thyroid nodules is cancerous. If a cancerous nodule is present, surgery may be necessary to remove the cancerous tissue.

Graves' Disease

Graves' disease is an autoimmune condition that results in the overproduction of thyroid hormone. In Graves' disease, the body's immune system attacks the thyroid gland, causing it to produce too much thyroid hormone. This can lead to a number of symptoms, including weight loss, anxiety, and heart palpitations. Treatment for Graves' disease usually involves taking medication to suppress the immune system or surgery to remove the thyroid gland.

Hashimoto Disease

Hashimoto's disease is an autoimmune disorder that affects the thyroid. The body's immune system attacks the thyroid, causing it to become inflamed and unable to produce hormones. This can lead to a variety of symptoms, including fatigue, weight gain, and depression. Hashimoto's disease is the most common form of autoimmune thyroiditis, and it is the leading cause of hypothyroidism in the United States. While there is no cure for Hashimoto's disease, treatment can help manage symptoms and prevent further damage to the thyroid.

"There are many preventative measures that can be taken to keep your thyroid healthy. Taking a daily multivitamin is a good place to start."

Taking Care of Your Thyroid

There are many preventative measures that can be taken to keep your thyroid healthy. Taking a daily multivitamin is a good place to start. This will help ensure that you are getting the vitamins and minerals you need for thyroid health. Iodine and selenium are two minerals that are especially important for thyroid function. You can get these from eating seafood, eggs, or taking supplements. Avoiding processed foods and eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is also important for thyroid health. Getting regular exercise and managing stress levels is also key for keeping your thyroid healthy. If you have any family history of thyroid problems, be sure to get checked out by a doctor regularly to catch any problems early on.
Treatment will depend on the severity and type of thyroid disease.

Prevention is Better Than Cure
